| Peter
was born in Gosport in 1938. He was educated at Alverstoke
School,
Portsmouth Grammar School, Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and the
College of Law.
His
wife Jenny is a doctor and they have three children.
Peter
qualified as a fast jet pilot in Canada during his time with
the RAF and later served as a Captain in the Royal Artillery
(Territorial Army). He was a solicitor and banker when he
was selected as Conservative candidate for the newly-formed
Gosport constituency in 1974.
Peter
has been the MP for Gosport ever since his election in 1974
- he is particularly proud to represent his home town.

During his political career he has been Parliamentary Private
Secretary to the Solicitor General (1979-1983), and to the Chief
Secretary to the Treasury (1983-1985). He also served as Parliamentary
Under Secretary of State (Industry Minister) at the Northern
Ireland Office (Sept 1986-July 1989). His major achievements
during that time were the privatisation of Short Bros. Aircraft
Company, and Harland and Wolff Shipyard. |
Peter has served as a member and Vice-Chairman of the Defence
Select Committee (1992-1997) and as Chairman of the Select
Committee on the Armed Forces Bill (1986 and 1996). He
was also Secretary (1975-1976) and Vice-Chairman (1977-1979)
of the Conservative Energy Committee. |

Currently, Peter serves as Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary
Local Hospitals Group and is a member of the Treasury Select
Committee.
From 1981 to 1986, and again since 1992 he has been a United
Kingdom delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly where he
is Co-Chairman of the Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council
(UNIC). |
Outside Parliament, Peter has served as Vice-President of the
RNLI, a patron of the Royal Naval Submarine Museum and
the Bridgeworks Trust and on the board of directors of
HMS Warrior 1860. For four years he was Chairman of the
Governors of St Vincent College and has been heavily involved
with the work of Bridgemary School to raise sufficient
money for a Sports College bid.
In their free time, Peter and Jenny enjoy opera, walking,
gardening and travel. |
