MP
for the Gosport constituency, Peter Viggers, this week called
for reconsideration of the pay and conditions of service personnel.
During
a question to the Secretary of State for Defence, Geoff Hoon,
Peter Viggers asked whether the special factors of service
life would be fully reflected in pay and conditions when they
were next considered.
Mr
Hoon agreed that the issue would need to be taken fully into
account by the Armed Forces Pay Review Body within its report.
Peter
said, "As our service personnel shape up to their duties
with characteristic courage and determination, it is only
fair that factors which are particular to service life should
be reflected in the pay and conditions of those involved.
It is not reasonable, for instance, that some personnel should
be paid several thousand pounds a year less than firefighters
for the role that they play. I shall continue to pursue the
matter to ensure that those within the armed forces do receive
the financial recognition they deserve".
