HOUSE OF LORDS VOTE

Peter Viggers, Member of Parliament for the Gosport constituency, has signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons urging the Government to give full prominence to the new Post Office Card Account. He explained today:

"From April 2003 the Government is introducing new methods of payment for pensions, child allowances and many other regular Government payments. If a large proportion of the 19 million customers who currently visit sub-post offices each week no longer do so after the change to direct payment, this will have a dramatic effect in damaging the sub-post office network, which is so very important to many people and especially the elderly.

The Early Day Motion that I have signed urges the Government to promote the Post Office Card Account, which is the method whereby pensioners and others will be able to receive their weekly payment in cash at a sub-post office. I know this is a facility that many people value very highly, and it will help to maintain the sub-post office system.
