Peter Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, said today:-

“I have been told today by Dr Lewis Moonie MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence, that the Defence Training Review is proceeding ahead of schedule which means that HMS DRYAD will close in 2004 compared with an earlier statement that it would close no later than 2011. Maritime warfare activities and training will transfer to HMS COLLINGWOOD in the Gosport constituency. New single living accommodation is to be built at Collingwood to accommodate the naval personnel who will be living there, and training equipment will also be moved to the Collingwood site.

I very much welcome this move. It reflects the fact that there are excellent facilities at Collingwood and no doubt the Minister of Defence has taken into account the strong armed forces tradition in the area and the welcome that the local community has always given to service personnel.
