Peter
Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, commented today
on the Home Office announcement that it intends to allow
families who have been here for at least three years to stay.
A copy of the Home Office announcement is attached.
Peter Viggers said:
“ The Government
has given a clear and simple message to those who wish
to come to this country. Once you are here, legally
or illegally, you will eventually win the right to stay.
This is the second occasion that the Government has announced
an
amnesty, the first having been in 1998. There is a further
message that those who establish families here increase their
chances of staying. Those who come here illegally now know
that if they duck and weave for long enough and establish
roots here, they will be permitted to stay regardless of
the manner
in which they first entered.
We have always
welcomed those who genuinely need and seek political asylum
and of course we will continue to do so.
But, giving
an amnesty to those who have entered illegally gives the
wrong message to others who plan to come here for economic
reasons.” |
