Peter
Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, has today given
his reaction to the news that protestors fighting against
the proposal to build an asylum accommodation centre in
Bicester have lost their legal challenge in the High Court.
Campaigners
against the centre in Bicester argued that the Deputy Prime
Minister, John Prescott, had ignored the results of a public
inquiry when he gave permission for the plan to go ahead.
However, the High Court today ruled that Mr Prescott was
entitled 'to
exercise his own judgement on the weight to be attached
to the material matters and thus to differ from the Inspector.'
Mr
Viggers said, "The Government's decision not to proceed
with an accommodation centre at HMS Daedalus can be seen
as a double miracle in the light of today's
High Court decision. We fought incredibly hard and were
fortunate enough to have had the proposals withdrawn at
a sufficiently early stage not to have had to fight in
the courts. Had the proposals for Lee-on-the-Solent not
been retracted, it is likely that we would have pursued
a similar line to that taken by protestors in Bicester,
and may very well have suffered the same fate." |
