Peter
Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, has this week spoken
in support of the role of the Volunteer Forces in the UK.
Peter, who himself
served time in the Territorial Army in Gosport, said “ Volunteer
Reservists play a vital role in the defence strategy of
the nation. They supply individuals
and units to back up our Regular Forces whenever increased
operations demand.
“Reservists
are trained to the same level of Regular Forces, and have
to achieve the same high standards of performance.
Far from being on the periphery of our armed forces, Reservists
actually make up about 25% of the total serving force, and
are able to provide additional specialist skills, for example,
in the medical field, which may not necessarily be called
up on in peace time.
“Members
of our Volunteer Forces give up their time on a regular
basis, and their commitment and dedication to
the jobs they do should be commended. We owe them a debt
of gratitude.”
Peter will also be attending a reception at The Great Hall
in Winchester on 30 April, to recognise and celebrate the
work of those who volunteer in the Reserve Forces. The reception
will be hosted by Councillor Mrs Margaret Snaith, Chairman
of Hampshire County Council, and will commence at 6.30pm. |
