MP
for the Gosport constituency, Peter Viggers, has added his
support to an Early Day Motion which pays tribute to the
work of the British women who served in the armed forces
and other wartime occupations during World War II.
The EDM also congratulates
the memorial to Women of World War II charity which has
raised over £200,000 to build
a memorial in this country, and urges the Natural Heritage
Memorial Fund to contribute to the cost of the memorial.
It is hoped that such a contribution would enable the memorial
to be unveiled in 2005, to mark the 60th anniversary of the
end of the war.
Peter said, “I
have signed the Early Day Motion in support of the building
of a memorial because unlike in Canada,
the USA and Australia, the UK does not currently have a memorial
to the vital contribution that UK women made to our victory
in 1945. 640,000 women served in the armed forces during
the second world war and a further 7 million women served
in the Land army, munitions factories fire brigades and other
occupations. We must also pay tribute to the women who cared
for families at home during that time, and the memorial will
help to formally recognise the tremendous contribution of
all these people whose part help to forge the Allied victory.” |
