Gosport’s
biggest employer and Gosport MP Peter Viggers were praised
in Parliament yesterday (Tuesday) for helping to “drive
up standards” of health care in the National Health
Service.
The praise came
from Health Under Secretary Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, when
he presented the Tyco Healthcare GP Enterprise Award,
at a ceremony in the House of Commons organised and hosted
by Mr Viggers. The award scheme, which is funded by Tyco
Healthcare and independently judged by the Royal College
of General Practitioners, rewards primary care teams that
find new ways to solve health care delivery problems, introduce
new efficiencies or extra services, and can be replicated
by other primary care teams. This year the judges distributed
awards totaling £25,000 between six teams across the
United Kingdom.
Dr Ladyman told
doctors and MPs that because there was “never
enough money to go round” in the NHS “we can
only increase the quality of care through innovation, and
by thinking of better ways to drive up standards. Where primary
care teams are achieving this it is vitally important to
recognize their efforts. Tyco’s sponsorship is a major
contribution.”
Mr Viggers said
the award scheme was “an excellent
example” of collaboration between the NHS and the private
sector. Tyco’s regional Vice President, Barry Skeet,
said the award scheme gives Tyco “the opportunity to
show we are a company committed to improving patients’ lives.” |
