Peter
Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, has urged local
residents to contact the Telephone Preference Service if
they are being plagued by silent calls from call centres.
Peter said, “The
problem of silent calls appears to be increasing, and I
have had complaints from a number of
constituents about the level of calls they are receiving.
Many call centres are now using automated dialling equipment
which dial more numbers than there are operators available.
Therefore, when no staff member is available to take the
call, customers are left on the receiving end of an empty
line.
“At best,
this is annoying, but when the recipients of these calls
are elderly or are living alone, it can be
far more worrying.
“The Telephone
Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone
number is no longer available
to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information
you do not wish to receive. If you have been troubled by
calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no
one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent
Callgard Service on 0870 4443969. Registering should, over
time, reduce the number of silent calls you receive.” |
