MP
FOR THE GOSPORT CONSTITUENCY, PETER VIGGERS, has this weekend
announced that he is to support David Cameron in the race
for the Conservative Party leadership.
Peter said, “I
have put a great deal of thought into the leadership contest.
I have spoken with all the contenders
and have cross-examined each of them on specific issues.
The person selected must not only be able to lead the Conservative
Party, but must also be capable of governing the country
as Prime Minister and he needs all the strength, ability
and resilience that this role will require.
“I have
very much welcomed the extended period that we have been
afforded to look at all the candidates. My decision
has been based to a certain extent on the conference performances
of the candidates, but also on private discussions with each
of them and their teams. I have discussed the subject with
a large number of constituents, both before and after the
conference, to obtain their views.
“On that
basis, I now issue the following press statement:
“David Davis has strengths and I was happy to nominate him
in 2001. The situation is now different. Events have moved
on and we have to identify the person best placed to win
and hold the confidence of today’s and tomorrow’s
voters. Before deciding I also wanted to speak to constituents.
My considered view is that David Cameron is our man”.” |
