Peter
Viggers, MP for the Gosport constituency, yesterday gave
his backing to the Conservative Party’s first campaign
group for equal representation for women.
Peter was the first male speaker at the launch of ‘Women2Win’,
a group comprising a broad cross-section of women and men
from the Conservative Party who recognise the need to select
more women to fight winnable seats and thus increase the
number of female Conservative MPs in Parliament.
Peter said after the launch, “The Conservative Party
has always tended to select candidates who fit a certain
profile - intelligent men in their 30s, with a wife, two
children and a spaniel. Perhaps this is a slight exaggeration
but I believe that if we continue to draw only from the same
pool and profile, we will not benefit from the variety of
experience and expertise that others might bring. It
is vital for the Conservative Party to become far more representative
of society as a whole, and especially of women.
“This will, I believe, improve the quality of Conservative
representation in Parliament, as the increase in numbers of
capable women in many other professions has no doubt improved
the quality of management and decision-making as a result.” |
