The balance of wood and purity of agave and vegetal is such a treat it makes you want to giggle because it's what you thought an anejo should always have been. It is a very rich and complex tequila and those with a very good nose will be able to detect pineapple, peach, orange blossom and nutmeg. It takes around 4 hours to load the agave piñas by hand into the huge 15-ton capacity brick oven with its metre-thick walls. Destilería Fortaleza’s finest expression – a handcrafted añejo made with 100% stone crushed Blue Weber agave and aged for a minimum of 18 months in charred American white oak barrels, from the legendary tequila-making Sauza family. In 1999, Don Guillermo began the process of restoring his family’s old distillery, Destileria La Fortaleza, which was retired in 1968 in favor of more ‘efficient’ facilities.

Its a little known fact but if you have ever wondered why there is currently no Extra Anejo expression from Fortaleza it is because they used it experimentally as a blend with the Anejo batch 42-a and 43-a. The agave notes in Fortaleza are bold enough to be able to withstand heavy oak aging, resulting in a tequila that is still able to balance vanilla, sweet spice, and tannins from the wood with cooked agave notes.
