Subordinate clauses in oratio obliqua and conditional sentences in oratio obliqua would both benefit from tables showing at a glance the changes, and absence of changes, undergone by the verbs used in oratio recta. John Taylor was for many years Head of Classics at Tonbridge School, UK, and is now Lecturer in Classics at Manchester University, UK. Latin Beyond GCSE' covers all the linguistic requirements for the OCR AS-level in Latin, and the grammar for A2. I used John Taylor's "Essential GCSE Latin" constantly whilst studying for the exam and found it the most useful of all my Latin books. I thought that I understood what contribution Latin made to English, but re-visiting the subject through this book has enhanced my appreciation of the part that it has played in modern culture, etc.

Grammar books and course books (and certain manuscripts and modern editions of texts) tend to conceal this diversity, a practice that goes back to and is due to the standardisation imposed on the language by the ancient grammarians. The standardisation of the language that resulted in Classical Latin covered a period of some 300 years. P. xii: Elision is defined as the “process by which the final vowel or syllable of a word is in effect knocked off”: in fact it is only the vowel which is knocked off (together with nasalizing m) leaving any preceding consonant intact. This is the old crossword-puzzle approach and can be made to work as a pencil-and-paper exercise: in addition students can be told to identify as short a vowel followed by another vowel in the same word and not forming a diphthong.Useful easy practice sentences followed by unseen passages which become progressively longer and more challenging as the students progress. Chapter Six, entitled ‘Readings’, contains the same passages as in the first edition, but laid out in a much more reader-friendly way; the reference grammar and summaries of syntax likewise contain no (perceptible) changes of substance, but are easier to read.

Taylor is a firm believer in the value of English-Latin translation: “Translating into Latin may seem difficult at first, but it is the best way to get to know the language properly and to test your understanding of it. The next section introduces the translation and scansion of verse, and includes passages for unseen translation and comprehension at A2 standard in both prose and verse. Rather than analysing the current boom in comics by focusing just on the printed text, however, this book looks at diverse manifestations of comics ‘beyond the page’. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.

The A2 prescription also includes continuous prose composition as an option, which the book does not attempt to cover. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Latin Beyond GCSE I'm using this with a couple of students who are sitting AS Level privately, and in limited time, after a very successful 'crash course' to GCSE. The visual presentation of the book, however, has certainly been looked at afresh: the new edition is no longer in monochrome, has illustrations, and is formatted similarly to Latin To GCSE and the new edition of Greek To GCSE. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

In some of the detail the book must go well beyond the immediate needs of students at this level, but this is hardly a fault. It introduces the translation and scansion of verse, and includes passages for unseen translation and comprehension at A2 standard in both prose and verse. The manuscript tradition shows that Cicero used both the subjunctive and indicative, seemingly indiscriminately, in indirect questions; but the grammarians — or some of them: they often could not agree, sometimes with themselves even — knew better than Cicero (how ironic is that? It has tonnes of examples for the different types of translation, comprehension, grammar and composition sections on the GCSE 9-1 language paper. Each point is carefully explained and followed by five Latin sentences to be translated into English and five English sentences to be put into Latin (except at the very end, where remote/closed conditions in indirect statement are evidently judged too difficult for the latter exercise).Taylor seems to think that the primary function of the gerundive is to express obligation or necessity — its main, almost sole, function in Greek. For those not familiar with the English system, GCSE is the General Certificate of Secondary Education, previously known as O Level; it is based on an examination taken at the end of the last year of general education, known variously as the Fifth Form or Year 11, in practice normally at age sixteen. Despite lack of funding and institutional support, not since the mid-twentieth century have comics in the region been so dynamic, so diverse and so engaged with pressing social and cultural issues. The six chapters are followed by a substantial reference section, which contains summaries of syntax, a reference grammar, seven useful brief appendices, an English to Latin vocabulary, a Latin to English vocabulary and an index . Also, there is no section on comparative clauses, though for some reason this may not be included in the specifications.

No explanation is given about how the lengthy (32 pages) section of reading passages (all prose) should be used. I happen to be one of three quite elderly ladies working without a teacher and we are finding this book invaluable.
